Viet Nam, Japan co-chair 17th Mekong-Japan Foreign Ministers' Meeting
VGP – Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung and Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu co-chaired the 17th Mekong-Japan Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Manila, the Philippines, on July 22, on the sidelines of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM-59) and Related Meetings.

Addressing the meeting, Le underscored the need for Mekong-Japan cooperation to continue adaptability and innovation in order to deliver more tangible benefits for their people and businesses. He proposed adopting "co-creation" as a guiding principle, under which Mekong countries and Japan would jointly identify priorities, formulate initiatives and implement projects based on shared needs and interests.
The Vietnamese minister outlined five priority areas for future cooperation: (i) enhancing high-quality infrastructure connectivity; (ii) strengthening resilient supply chains; (iii) accelerating digital transformation in tandem with digital workforce development; (iv) improving water resource management and climate resilience; (v) expanding cooperation in cybersecurity and the fight against cybercrime.
He also stressed the important role of the private sector in mobilizing resources to drive innovation and promote rapid, sustainable development.
For his part, Motegi reaffirmed Japan's commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Mekong subregion. He said Japan would continue working closely with Mekong countries through practical cooperation projects in the fields of water resource management, environmental protection, transnational crime prevention, digital transformation, cybersecurity, infrastructure connectivity and trade facilitation.
The Japanese foreign minister also highlighted the need for stronger coordination between diplomatic and law enforcement agencies to effectively combat transnational organized crime, especially cybercrime.
The ministers agreed to effectively implement the 2024 Mekong-Japan Cooperation Strategy while closely coordinating preparations for the 13th Mekong-Japan Summit, which is expected to define the partnership's direction in the next phase.
They also adopted a co-chairs' statement reaffirming their commitment to injecting fresh momentum into Mekong-Japan cooperation and delivering more substantive outcomes.
